Generative Summary

  1. Tension in the arena / surveying the city. The party (Kunaq, Nakuji Nabunae, Meng, Octavius, and M’Baku) are in the arena, watching chaos outside and trying to help terrified citizens.

  2. The ground trembles — initiative called. The DM describes the earth shaking and prompts History/Perception checks; the group prepares as something bursts up through the arena floor.

  3. Creatures emerge. A large, insectoid/ankheg-like creature with mandibles and acid attacks erupts from the pit; acid spray forces Dexterity saves for those nearby.

  4. Party reaction & movement. Some PCs leap down from the top of the stands to the arena floor (dash/Step of the Wind options are discussed), electing to close with the creature quickly.

  5. First round — ranged and melee opening.

    1. Meng (archer) lands a successful shot (sneak attack) from elevation and deals heavy damage to the ankheg.

    2. Octavius uses an improvised acid device (Tasha’s-like caustic brew); the creature makes Dex saves and is hurt/affected by acid.

    3. Others attempt to engage or reposition (M’Baku, Kunaq, Nakuji Nabunae make movement/attacks).

  6. Creature counterattacks. The ankheg bites or spits acid (some party members take significant acid damage), successfully hitting at least one PC for a large chunk of HP.

  7. Coordinated follow-ups. The group flanks and focuses:

    1. Octavius and others repeatedly strike the wounded ankheg (flurry/extra attacks and teamwork noted).

    2. M’Baku delivers decisive strikes (chops off mandible / smashes skull) that collapse the beast. The transcript specifically records breaking the mandible and crushing the skull; the first ankheg falls.

  8. Second ankheg appears / standard continued engagement. Another similar monstrosity is present (the party fights more than one), and the PCs repeat the tactic: ranged damage, acid application, flanking melee. Multiple PCs use bonus actions/spells (healing word, second wind, action surge) to stay in the fight.

  9. Victory & aftermath. Both ankhegs are felled after combined teamwork; the fallen gladiator (or an NPC who was nearly dying) is stabilized (Spare the Dying / healing), and the party gains immediate goodwill and notoriety from bystanders.
